Presenting

Communicating is one of the most essential aspects to research and advancement; we motivate reason, understand methods, and appreciate developments. I believe presenting provides us the ideal opportunity to share science and passion in depth. I present and teach for a variety of audiences; I have some samples that can be referenced below.

August 2019: A Bayesian & EHR-derived Latent Phenotyping model for COPD

I presented an abbreviated version of the Latent Variable model that I developed as an employee of Kaiser Permanente at KP’s Annual Grand Rounds Event. My presentation slides are available, and if you’d like to see the research project in full detail, head to my COPD Research.

July 2019: A Bayesian latent class approach for EHR-based phenotyping

A work in progress report presented alongside Dr. Ernest Shen.

May 2019: Statistical Methods for Differentially Methylated Loci

I presented methods for detecting differentially methylated loci when you have multiple treatments and need to control for other factors. I taught the Cuzick Method to a Non-parametrics class at UCLA. This presentation incorporated my genetics background with this 2014 article by Chen, Huang, & Liu. Please contact me for a copy of my slides.

February 2019: Discrete State Markov Chain Methods for single-cell RNA-seq

I developed a 50 minute presentation for UCLA that discussed the statistical methods for single-cell RNA-seq experiments from Munsky, Fox, & Neuert’s 2015 publication. My presentation slides are available, and if you’d like my LaTeX code, please contact me.

March 2018: Changing Shape of Color Change – Mix It Up Event

This interactive lesson taught children about how things like animals or pigments change colors at the Kidzu Children’s Museum. With permission, we made color changing play dough that kids could watch change and were able to take home.

March 2017: Genetics of Taste – Mix It Up Event

This interactive lesson taught children about their genes specific to tasting bitterness at the Kidzu Children’s Museum. With permission, we used their parents’ results to figure out the children’s Punnett Squares.

Jan 2016 – Dec 2017: Supplemental Instructor for BIOL 202: Genetics

alongside Dr. Blaire Steinwand (3 semesters), Dr. Gidi Shemer (2 semesters), and Dr. Alaina Garland (1 semester)

April 2017: Social Marketing and Platelet Donation Skills Training

I taught a training about Platelet Donation and marketing strategies for undergraduate students in the Buckley Public Service Scholars Program at UNC-CH.

March 2017: Native American Languages: Linguistic Relativity

I taught about Native American languages, including the history, cultural variations among languages and compared to English, and unique resources at UNC-CH for students (like learning Cherokee from a tribe member).

March 2017: Microscope Building Workshop

I assisted teaching how to build a $10 microscope at the NC Technology in Education Society Conference to researchers and school teachers.
